School's Out

For students enrolled in school within the Anchorage School District, today is a big day - the Last Day of School!

Summer, whether the weather agrees or not, is here. Corresponding with the semester's end are the launching of boats, wetting of lines, cleaning of garages, and prepping of RVs. 'Tis the season!

Some time ago, an anonymous Brit penned a now-well-known poem.

Whether the weather be fine
Or whether the weather be not,
Whether the weather be cold
Or whether the weather be hot,
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not.

I like Anonymous' spirit! I believe we can all learn a bit from him or her. We need to. The words of the Whether / Weather poem remind me of the Spirit-authored words of Paul.

Philippians 4:11b-13 (NIV)
I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Verse thirteen is often ill-applied to everything from scoring touchdowns to making first chair. (Remember, God works through losing teams and "failed" musicians as much as their opposites.) It is aptly applied when the reader recognizes that God works in this world "whatever the weather," and that trusting that same God, we can "weather the weather" no matter what.

God is ready in and out of season for, in God, there is no off season. He - the One who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow - is with those who seek Him day in and day out, season in and season out, and when school's in and school's out.
