Back to Basics

While I have a few 5Ks under my belt, I have yet to set out to conquer a triathlon for some reason.  I wear a watch bearing that name on my wrist.  Is it like a man wearing a cowboy hat who has never ridden a horse?  Or, perhaps, like the driver of an off-road capable SUV who drives only on the city streets and highways?  I actually wear the Timex Ironman watch for a few reasons:
  1. I like the way it looks.
  2. The Indiglo feature is helpful in dark places.
  3. It is waterproof.
  4. I can set three separate alarm times and use each as needed.

Oh, and let's not forget, it displays the time of day.  That feature, after all, is the basic reason for the device's existence.

In life, we do well to remember basic reasons so that we do not miss the ordinary things of life.
  1. If you are married, recall the reasons you chose your spouse.
  2. If you are an artist, remember why you paint, draw, sculpt, etc.
  3. When you look in the mirror, see God's creation looking back at you.
  4. When you tuck your child in bed, pause and tell God "thank you" for the gift of your son or daughter.
  5. When you deposit your paycheck or note the direct deposit, acknowledge how God gave you skill and money to further His kingdom.
  6. When your alarm sounds tomorrow morning, thank God for another day.
Enjoy the bells and whistles of life.  At the same time, remember the basics.
