Become

I regularly read J.D. Walt's "Seedbed." A few weeks ago, in a piece on 1 Corinthians 1:4-9, Walt wrote . . .

If one's goal is merely to "do something," then when that said something is done, the doer is done. Faith, however, is not a checklist. Yes, as James informs, we need to be doers and not merely hearers; but the doing is not the goal. That is a goal far too easily achieved.

If you desire to please God, know that He finds pleasure in your enduring commitment. Remember the foundation verse of my blog . . .

Romans 12:1 (MSG)
So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering.

You and I "become someone who . . . reminds other people of Jesus" as we live our everyday, ordinary lives for God.

Please continue to do.

• Volunteer at the food kitchen.
• Help in the church nursery.
• Sing on the worship team.
• Go on the mission trip.
• Pick up litter.
• Tutor a student.
• Give generously from your money.
• Listen to the lonely.

And, as you do those things, continue to grow in your relationship with Jesus. The work of the servant of Christ is a job from which there is not legitimate retirement.

So, as you do, remember to become.

• Become a more patient person.
• Become a good listener.
• Become more pure in thought.
• Become a worthy example to follow.
• Become more and more like Jesus.
