No one likes a showoff. Or so the saying goes. Judging from social media posts, "reality" shows, and the like - people, at least some among us, do like showoffs. While personal exaltation is not a good path down which to go, other types of displaying beauty are quite acceptable. For example, I enjoy "showing off" our state to visitors. A few days ago, I had the privilege of giving two friends from out of state a limited by time yet nevertheless amazing tour of parts of our beautiful state. It wasn't amazing because of the tour guide :-). It was amazing because of the subject matter. Another Mark provided an amazing tour.
Mark (presumably John Mark, cousin of Barnabas) wrote the oldest of the four New Testament gospel accounts. From the start, Mark, the "tour guide," informs his reader that the record is not a story about him; it's a record of Jesus the Messiah.
I relate to Mark and not just because we share a name. I preach, teach, and write about Jesus. I have studied, worked at, prepared, and committed my life to doing each of these callings with skill; and I pray that the quality is evident. I do so because I am called to proclaim the best subject matter ever covered. I get to "show off" Jesus! So do you! You may never preach a sermon, teach a Bible lesson, or write a book, or you may. Regardless, you get to "show off" Jesus. He calls both you and me to . . . - talk about Him (Matthew 28) - love like Him (John 13) - forgive like Him (Ephesians 4) - think like Him (Colossians 3) I encourage you to show off. Not your singing voice, pitching arm, physique, intelligence, or artistic ability. Your Savior! #ordinarylives
